Chemical Sound (rip), the studio where we did Elephant Shell, had this door that would *never* shut properly. Have you seen “It’s A Wonderful Life”? You know at the end, when he comes home and that piece of the staircase falls off, and he’s just overjoyed? That’s how I felt for years every time that door didn’t shut properly.

Me and some friends have decided to write and (hopefully) film a movie. The reason I'm telling you this is because we wanted to use the song Cut Cut Paste as a starting point for the plot, and we were just wondering if that would be okay with you and your fellow band members. Also we wanted to use the phrase "Heaven's just for moviemakers" if possible. Just wanted to double check that we weren't breaking laws or anything. Thank you for being awesome!

Oh yeah go for it. If you use the song and then make money or something you’ll probably have to email our management and make it legit, but just mentioning it or using a line or whatever is pretty much fair game as far as I’m aware.

This question is old too so hopefully you’ve already moved forward. I hope it’s going great! Please send me a link to the movie if you get it all together.

Hello! Their take on the TPC song Sixties Remake, for example, changed the chord progression in such a way that it basically ruined the original for me, I was so mad that we didn’t come up with that first.

They’re putting together an album, and one of the songs on it was written and sung by Dave. It’s absolutely beautiful and I can’t wait to hear the finished version. In fact, I’m going to email them now and ask for it. You guys will love it. I also wrote some lyrics for it, which I’m pretty proud of!

have you considered keeping your mustache? We haven’t worked together much at all, outside of touring, though Nick and Jake play in a (really great) band called Stella Ella Ola who I’ve done some production work with.

Tokyo and Hollerado just worked out a Christmas cover together for our shows together later this month, and it was blast combining the two. They work in a really different way than we do, but they’re also really similar - both bands speak this kind of unique inner language that only comes from working with people you love for a long time. But we do really different things with it, and putting the two languages together was a lot of fun.

They’re the best.

Hey Graham! So, I have a question about a TPC song, "Your English is Good", I saw that someone asked if it was a political song.. and you answered saying that not much thought went into the lyrics. Now, maybe I'm crazy and I read too much into things but I have a hunch that parts of it relate to a book I read in high school called "Fifth Business".. Deptford, a tramp, injustice?! It fits in really well. .. Maybe Dave wrote it in subconsciously? Or maybe I have too much time on my hands..

Those bits are for sure about that book. Which is funny, because I seem to recall Dave calling me the day before we had a test related to that book and asking me to sum up the last half, as he hadn’t bothered to read it. It was not an easy summary. I’m not sure if he ever did read it, either… I guess he got what he needed for the song.

Are your glasses actually prescription?

That’s like asking someone with a cane if they really need that cane or if they’re just a big fan of House MD.

Going with all the questions about music, where did Gone come from? I remember hearing it for the first time and being surprised how beachy sounding it was. was it just you guys trying something new?

Everything we ever do is us trying something new. Gone is just a song we wrote, like all the rest of em. That’s not a real answer but it’s as honest as I know how to be.

Is there any part of your musical process/growth that you felt was really intimidating, and took a lot of motivation to get through? I know for me I still don't understand MIDI entirely and it seems like so much work to figure out how to work digital things like that, while I found the more traditional music learning easy. Hopefully this question makes sense hahaa

Every single part of it. I think that’s how growth happens. If you’re not intimidated and scared and frustrated then I would submit that you’re not fully engaging with the terrifying monster that is music and creativity. It’s easy as long as it’s easy, but it only gets really good after it’s hard.

That said, the learning curve for software or MIDI or computers is not part of that. And unless you want to be a studio wizard, you probably shouldn’t understand MIDI entirely. Here is what you need to know about MIDI to use it as a creative tool: plug a MIDI keyboard into your computer via USB and then create the appropriate kind of track in whatever DAW you’re using and then play it like any other instrument. Someone else will probably be able to tell you the rest, or you’ll figure it out. I bet there’s a million YouTube videos about it. But whatever you do, for the love of God, don’t ever let a lack of understanding of some bullshit computer thing be an obstacle between you and what you do.

What word is yelled at the beginning of Gone?
